The existing educational inequity in India is huge, and this disparity is most striking when one observes the difference between students in low-income schools and those in high-income schools across the country. Particularly in low-income communities, the quality of education is consistently impacted by the shortage of adequately trained teachers and the inability of schools to retain quality teachers over a time period significant enough to impact student learning. One of the surest ways to ensure teacher efficiency and subsequently student achievement is to provide quality teacher training on an ongoing basis.

The issue with the current B.Ed. teacher training provided by the system is primarily that it is a pre-service training, and that there is a negligible amount of ongoing training at best, thus leaving teachers ill-equipped to constantly increase their own efficiency. The few teacher training programs that do provide training on the job are lacking in several areas, primarily due to the absence of adequate systems and structures to focus on the needs of the teacher and the students, and also due to the lack of accountability in the absence of tracking mechanisms.

Having considered all these issues within the existing framework for teacher training in India, we have decided to work on Teachify as a solution to the ongoing needs of teachers. Through the certified training programs that we will provide on low-cost tablets, teachers will be able to work towards two levels of certification at their own pace. The training provided will draw from best practices in pedagogy and educational research, and will continuously assess teacher understanding by drawing upon a teacher's ability to critically analyze situations and apply methods newly learnt through the modules. In this manner, upon having completed the certification teachers will be better equipped to meet the needs of their students and bridge the vast educational gap that exists.
